Shaw Interviewing Rule
She knows how much he hates doing stuff like this so she keeps trying to distract him by crossing and uncrossing her legs and twirling her hair around her finger. He’s onto her tricks though so he taunts her back by flicking the tip of his tongue over the ring in his lip and by leaning closer to her and rubbing the tip of his nose against her ear while he whispers dirty things in her ear.
Shaw moving a few inches away with a laugh: Do you think if you had known how I felt about you when we were younger it would have changed anything? Would you have done things differently?
He sprawls out and narrows his eyes at her: Are you asking me if I would have stopped being a perpetually horny and ridiculously stupid teenaged boy? Uh-no. I was angry at the world and selfish with it. If I had known you had a thing for me back then I probably would have done something seriously stupid and ruined any shot we had had at something later on down the road. I wasn’t ready for you then, I have to work at being a man that’s good enough to be ready for you know, but its work I’m happy to put in every day for the rest of our lives.
Shaw tilts her head to the side and considers him silently: What’s your biggest fear?
He sighs and lifts his hands to run them over his shaved head. He hasn’t had his outrageous hair for a while now and anyone that knows him well knows that’s a sign things in his life are changing and his hair often reflects that.
Rule: Being responsible for anyone other than myself. Having someone I care about rely on me is terrifying. I’m always worried I won’t be good enough. You’ve helped with that and now I think I’m ready for…
He trails of and their eyes meet as they share a secret smile.
Shaw nods and reaches out to pat his knee: You are so ready. It’ll be fine, we’ll all be fine. A lot has changed or is changing around us and it seems to be happening so fast. What’s been the best moment you’ve had with someone that isn’t me? What stands out the most?
Rule: Watching Rome be a dad has been pretty cool. It’s crazy how he lets Cora boss him around all the time and I love RJ.
A soft smile crosses his face and it makes Shaw put a hand up to her heart.
Rule: I dunno. Having all my friends fall in love and find girls that are perfect for them is pretty sweet and so was opening the new shop with Nash. I like the way things seem to have fallen in place for everyone even if it took some work to make the pieces fit.
He reaches out and snags a piece of her long whitish-blonde hair: That’s not a fair question though. All my absolute favorite moments always have you in them, Casper. You know that.
Shaw: Did any of the women that your friends ended up with surprise you? Like I know when we first started hanging out Jet and Nash were stunned that I was the only girl that got to spend more than one night in your bed and Rome threatened to hurt you if you hurt me.
He chuckles at the memory: Not really. Jet needed someone strong enough to fight through all that emotional baggage he was hauling around because of his folks yet soft enough to see how really sensitive he can be. Ayden has a core of steel but a delicate touch so that was a no brainer. Rome needed someone that was as much of a warrior as he was and someone that would never, ever be scared of him so it had to be Cora. Nash and Saint both have really fragile souls and I thing together they make each other stronger, they make each other appreciate their own greatness. I didn’t think he would have made it through Phil’s passing without her and I don’t think she would have ever let herself love if it hadn’t been for him…There is always something about a girl that you used to know. Rowdy and Salem make absolute sense the instant you see the two of them together and Asa….Never has a man had to work so hard to get to place where he deserves a woman like the one he has. On paper some of them might not make sense but when you see them…and us together there is no doubt we are all with exactly who we should be with no matter what anyone else has to say about it.
Shaw: I agree 100%. Like Phil told Nash, love is not negotiable and it doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else. So you asked me what my favorite memory of Remy was and I’m going to ask you the same thing as my last question. What’s your favorite memory of your twin brother?
It’s hard for him to talk about Remy even after all this time. Those pale blue eyes frost over like glass on a winter day and his voice drops an octave: It’s gonna sound weird but sometimes I miss looking at him and seeing a normal version of myself. Like what I would have been if I hadn’t gotten into the ink and the metal. Sometimes I would look at him and think “That’s who I would be if I was normal” but I wasn’t normal. I was always just me and without Remy all I was ever going to be is me there was never going to be a shot and anything easy with him gone. It’s hard to explain.
She gets up and moves so that she can sit on his lap. He wraps his arms around her waist one of his hands splayed wide on her rounded belly as she rests her head on his shoulder.
Shaw: All you ever need to be is you and easy is boring.
Rule: Are we done now?
Shaw laughing: We’re done.
The New York Times and USA Today bestselling Marked Men series continues with this sizzling, sexy story of love, heartbreak, fate, and second chances.
After the only girl he ever loved told him that he would never be enough, Rowdy St. James knocked the Texas dust off his boots and set out to live up to his nickname. A good ol’ boy looking for good times and good friends, Rowdy refuses to take anything too seriously, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. Burned by love once, he isn’t going to let himself trust a woman again. But that’s before his new co-worker arrives, a ghost from the past who’s suddenly making him question every lesson he ever learned.
Salem Cruz grew up in house with too many rules and too little fun—a world of unhappiness she couldn’t wait to forget. But one nice thing from childhood has stayed with her; the memory of the sweet, blue-eyed boy next door who’d been head over heels in love with her little sister.
Now, fate and an old friend have brought her and Rowdy together, and Salem is determined to show him that once upon a time he picked the wrong sister. A mission that is working perfectly—until the one person that ties them together appears, threatening to tear them apart for good.
