Talent to Burn by Laura Welling

OUT OF 5 STARS

Shameless Recommendation

Marissa PNR Mini Banner Talent to Burn gives you a bad boy, a girl on the run, and threats all around them, with some wicked plot twists. I enjoyed this story, how you weren’t quite sure what was coming around the next corner, and I felt the suspense mixed well with the mystery aspects.
The banter between Cat and Jamie was sometimes sexy and sometimes funny, the perfect compliments within the storyline.
Jamie is always saving Cat, and eventually Cat gets to return the favor once she comes in to her powers.
There may have been some nail-biting towards the end during the rescue. I’m definitely intrigued to see where this new author goes, whether this will be a series or not. [August 2014]

Publisher Synopsis

Passion burns. Betrayal scars.

Cat Wilson grew up a misfit among misfits. She couldn’t read minds, see the future, or start fires like the other Talented kids inside the shadowy Grey Institute. Finally she ran, leaving her beloved brother, Eric, behind. She’s been running ever since.

When she learns that Eric has escaped, leaving deadly fires in his wake, Cat is torn between fear for her brother, and unwanted attraction to the messenger, a charming, Talented ex-con who lives for the next adrenaline rush.

Jamie Murphy is sure his group of outcast Talents can help Eric—if they can get to him before the cops or the Institute, and before he kills again. Cat’s aversion to Talented bad boys is like a wall of ice, but to his surprise, he doesn’t have to use an ounce of his own unique gift to find a way through it.

Yet locating Eric is only the beginning. In the battle to pull him back from the brink, Cat must find the courage to unlock a fearsome Talent of her own. And pray the psychic backdraft doesn’t destroy everyone she loves.

[su_quote]Obviously sleeping with him would be a terrible idea, and I didn’t intend to regardless of good conversation, a couple glasses of wine, and an incredibly hot evening on the dance floor. åÊI still wished he had made a move on me. åÊSo I could say no.[/su_quote]

[su_quote]”Tell me then, Catrina, and tell me true, when was the last time you felt relaxed? åÊHow can we get you to loosen up a little?” I flushed, thinking about how loose he’d gotten me in Vegas. A slow smile spread over his features, as if he’d read my mind.[/su_quote]

[su_quote]”Compromise?” åÊHe smiled, his lips irresistible, but I still held out. åÊ”We can get a house with a white picket fence to live in, when we’re not stealing cars and being shot at.” åÊI laughed out loud, and closed the distance between us.[/su_quote]

GENRE

My first foray into the Romance genre came my freshman year in high school English, where the teacher had us all read books from several different genres. So, my first book boyfriend and PnR introduction, if you will, was Richard Merlin, from The Wizard of Seattle. Prior to that, I’d only read Fantasy or Sci-fi, with a little teen horror thrown in for angst. I was reading The Vampire Diaries decades before it was even a twinkle in the eyes of the producers. Now, I am addicted to PnR, always reading at least one book a week about vamps, wolves, angels, demons, Fae, or overall magic.
