Why Do We Like This Book?

Angela
I have no idea how Aly Martinez does it. She writes words that make you hot and bothered, all the while building a story line that tears through every single human emotion that exists. This series blew me away. The Darkest Sunrise sets the foundation, gives you hope, and then rips your heart out. The Brightest Sunset makes you cry (UGLY TEARS), hugs your soul, and leaves you staring at the last page in awe. Charlotte and Porter were two of the most dynamic characters I have read in a long time. Charlotte finds herself on an incredibly painful journey all throughout the series. She lives heartache every day and you feel the depths of her sorrow through Aly's flawless storytelling. Porter has his own demons and it is heartbreaking watching his struggles develop as you turn the pages. You can literally feel your emotions climbing and amplifying with each word. They are each other's problem and they are each other's solution. Their chemistry is constant through it all and their love for each other outweighs so many hardships they come across. This series is phenomenal. An amazing story about unyielding love, broken hearts and second chances. A 5 STAR must read.

I wasn’t a rash person by any stretch of the imagination, but I felt it with her – the common denominator I’d never found with anyone else. Don’t get me wrong. Love at first sight didn’t exist. Soul mates were the likes of fairy tales. And lust wasn’t love, no matter how hard you tried to convince yourself otherwise.
“Please, Porter,” she said in a husky voice. I felt every single consonant and vowel of her plea deep inside my soul. She didn’t need to beg. Not now. Not ever. If she wanted anything, I was going to give it to her.
“You’re hard to read, Charlotte. But your hands always tell me the truth.” His voice got low and husky. “You grip me tight when you’re nervous or anxious. You squeeze me soft when you’re being sweet. And you pull it away when you’re trying to hide.” He nuzzled his face and breathed, “Tonight, we’ll figure out what your hands do when I’m making you come.

Publisher Synopsis

The Darkest Sunrise:

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.
“You’re pregnant.”
“It’s a boy.”
“Your son needs a heart transplant.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun.
Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.
“He’s gone.”
For ten years, the darkness consumed me.
In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

The Brightest Sunset:

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Words destroyed me.
“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”
“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”
“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
More lies.
Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.
Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.
“He’s gone.”
In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”
