“Van.”

I spin at the sound of Ben’s voice, and silently cringe. I look horrible. I’m sweating like an ice cold drink without a coaster,
and the clothes I wear here are skin tight, making it easier to move.

“You’re not usually here at this time,” I say and dab a towel on my face.
“What’s up?”

“I had a meeting with another instructor,” he says with a smile. “Thought
I’d say hi.”

“Hi.” I smile and readjust my ponytail. It’s much smaller now, but I can
still pull it back. “How was your day?”

“Busy,” he replies and surprises me by letting his eyes travel up and down
my body. “I like the new hair. You look great.”

“I’m a mess.” I chuckle and hook my towel around my shoulders. “You,
however, do look great.”

That’s a fucking understatement. He’s in cargo shorts and a black tank top,
showing off his tattoos and his muscles.

Good lord, the muscles.

“Can I show you a few things?” he asks, breaking my concentration on his
muscles.

“Sure,” I frown as I follow him back into the empty classroom. “Am I doing
something wrong?”

“No, I just want to go over some form things.” He leads me to the center of
the room and stands behind me, looking into my eyes through the mirror.

Oh God. This is way sexier than it probably should be.

“Assume the stance.”

I follow his directions and work very hard to not react to his strong hands
on my sides as he walks me through punches, kicks, and better ways to keep
my center of gravity.

“You’re small,” he murmurs and pushes my legs just a little closer
together. “I want you to keep your feet just a little closer together.
You’ll have better balance.”

I nod. “It feels better.”

He smiles at me. I can’t keep my eyes off of him in the mirror. The way he
moves, his facial expressions.

Ben has always been attractive to me, but holy shit, did he get hotter? Or
was I just too broken before to see it?

Because holy shit, he’s hot.

“Van?”

“Yeah?”

“I just asked you to do the spin/elbow move.”

“Oh.” I bite my lip and will myself to stop ogling his arms.

“Are you okay?”

“Of course.” I do as he asks and spin, attempting to ram my elbow in his
nose, the way I’ve been taught, but he blocks and sends me onto my ass.
“Damn it.”

“You’re not spinning quickly enough.”

“I’m as clumsy as they get,” I remind him. “If I spin too fast, I’ll fall
on my ass. I’ll be helping my attacker more than anything.”

“It’ll actually feel easier,” he says, helping me to my feet. “You can do
this. I’ve seen it.”

“You’re taller than anyone else I’ve ever sparred with.”

“Good,” he says and narrows his eyes. “Chances are, if you ever have to
defend yourself, your attacker won’t be shorter than you.”

“True.” I nod thoughtfully.

“But if you’re still not comfortable doing this with me, that’s fine. I can
make suggestions for Shelly to work on next week.”

“I’m okay,” I reply, and am surprised to realize that it’s true. It wasn’t
long ago that I couldn’t stand for any man to touch me, not even my
brothers. But I don’t mind so much now.

In fact, I’m utterly shocked to realize that his touch is turning me on. I
don’t remember the last time I had sexual thoughts toward a man. Even Ben.
Which was one more thing that made me sad.

But hello, long lost hormones.

I pull my phone out of my pocket to call Beau Boudreaux, who also happens to be my landlord. Of course, there is no answer. The man lives upstairs, directly above this shop. Can’t he hear the water? Does he sleep like the dead? Or maybe he’s not home.

I frown and open my mind, searching the building. He’s home. I can feel his presence. And he might be naked. I immediately slam the psychic door shut and walk outside, up the wrought iron steps to his loft, and bang on the door.

“Wake up,” I mutter. “And put some pants on.” I raise my hand to bang again, but the door is flung open and there’s Beau, rubbing sleep from his eyes, a frown on his handsome face. He’s pulled some sweatpants on. Thank God.

“What’s going on?” he demands.

“I have a leak,” I reply and swallow hard, willing myself to keep my eyes on his face, and not the sculpted muscles of his torso. I’ve met the man exactly twice, including right now, but what he does to my libido is ridiculous. I’d forgotten that I have a libido. Which is a sad statement all on its own.

“You had to wake me up at four-thirty for a leak?”

“I have three inches of water on my floor,” I reply and turn to stomp down the stairs. “Come look!” I don’t look back as I wade back into my store.

A few moments later, I hear Beau come clomping down the steps and look back as he fills the doorway with his wide shoulders. He’s tall, pushing six-and-a-half feet. His hair is dark, and his eyes are like old whiskey. Those whiskey eyes survey the space, frowning when he sees the amount of water on the floor.

“Do you know where it’s coming from?”

“The bathroom,” I reply and lead him to it.

“The fucking ceiling fan?” He exclaims and shakes his head. “I was expecting the toilet to be overflowing. Old plumbing is unpredictable.”

“I was expecting the same, but here we are,” I say and cross my arms over my chest. He glances back at me, and his eyes drop to my cleavage for just an instant before he looks me in the eye. I don’t uncross my arms.

“I’m going to shut off the water to the building.”

“Good idea.” He rushes back outside and a few moments later, the water slows to a small trickle, and then fast drops. He comes back inside and looks up.

“Must be a broken pipe.”

“Are you a plumber as well as a billionaire mogul?” I ask, unable to resist.

His lips twitch. “I’m good at a lot of things.”

Oh, I just bet you are.reprinted with permission from the author

“You dare me?” I raise a brow. “What will happen if I do?” “I’ll take you out to the car and suck your clit until you come all over my mouth,” he replies without looking up from his ice cream, as if he’s talking about the damn weather. “You’re sweeter than this ice cream.”
“I missed this. Your taste. The noises you make. The way your body comes alive for me.”

Easy MelodyQ: In Easy Melody we spent some time with some old friends (not to give too much away). Will we visit with other old friends in the future?

I’m not sure. It’s usually a surprise to me while I’m writing the book. I wouldn’t rule it out, but I also wouldn’t count on it. How’s that for vague?

Q: What lesson (or lessons) did you learn from writing your previous series (With Me in Seattle or Love Under the Big Sky) that you are implementing in the Boudreaux series?

I don’t think it’s lessons as much as it’s just growing as a writer. I hope that my writing is improving and evolving with each book.

Q: You’ve written all different kinds of heroes. Is there a particular hero type that you find especially challenging?

Every hero is a challenge because they’re all different. I think it’s interesting to try to get inside the head of a man, to see things through his eyes, and react the way a man would. It’s one of the most enjoyable parts of the process for me.

Q: The women in your book are always modern, successful and relatable. Where do you find inspiration for them?

Honestly, I just write women that I’d like to be friends with. If I like them and root for them, the reader will too.

Q: Each of your series have centered around a very specific locale. When planning a series, do you start with the location or the characters?

It all seems to come together organically. When I plan a new series, I really sit down and look at the big picture: setting, plot and characters.

Q: What’s the weirdest or most interesting gift you’ve received from a reader?

I can’t think of anything that’s been particularly weird or different. I’m always surprised by the homemade gifts, and how much time readers put into crafting them. It’s humbling and so sweet.

Lightning Round!

Q: What’s your favorite thing in your closet?
Handbags

Q: Coffee or Tea?
Coffee

Q: Wine: White, Red, or Pink?
White

Q: Favorite childhood board game?
I hate board games.

Q: Cupcakes or brownies?
Can’t I have both?

Q: Favorite TV show of all time?
Friends

Q: If you could have any superpower, which would you choose?
Hmm… I want to fly. I think.

Q: Most outrageous note from your editor?
I plead the fifth.

Q: Favorite magazine?
Cosmo

Q: Favorite guilty pleasure book?
No book is a guilty pleasure.

“I’m going to fuck you like no one else ever has.”
Charly runs to the back to find my size, then returns a moment later with a box. “These are pretty,” she says.
Declan takes the box from her, pulls the stuffing out of a shoe, then kneels before me and drags his hand down the back of my leg, behind my knee, to my calf. “Give me your foot, sweetheart.”
I brace myself on his shoulder and offer him my naked foot, which he slips into the grey shoe. But before I can put it on the floor, he leans in and presses a kiss to my ankle.
I wonder how Charly would feel about her brother fucking me right here, in the shoe store? Because I’m about to climb him.
