Top 5 Smut Books That Will Seriously Mess With Your Head

Part psychological thriller, part romance, and all kinds of messed up, these major mind-fuck books and series are ones you definitely want to read when you’re ready for a roller coaster ride of emotions.

These books follow no set outline or formula followed by so many other stories. Instead, these books take those formulas, stomp all over them, and boil them with their ex-lover’s rabbit.

There’s nothing sickeningly sweet or overly romantic about these stories. Hell, you’d be hard-pressed to find ANY romance in these books. They’re all rooted in relationships, and the characters may find a happy ending, but by no means are these books and series full of hearts and flowers.

The top 5 mind-fuck books (and series) I’m listing aren’t presented in order because I wouldn’t want the characters to haunt my sub-conscience. Some of them are downright lunatics.

    Consequences Series by Aleatha Romig

    My Recommendation for Convicted:

If you told me while I was reading Consequences that by the end of Convicted, I’d make a place in my heart for Anthony Rawlings, I would have yelled in your face, “YOU BE CRAZY, YO.” In fact, I think I said that exactly to Aleatha Romig several times while I read Consequences and Truth. After his deplorable actions of the first and through the second book, Truth, I couldn’t foresee ever warming up to Tony. It seems Aleatha did the impossible: she forced my heart open and pushed her way in to plant Tony firmly in. In what I describe as a literary soap opera, the trilogy has so many mysteries, twists, turns, murders, relationships, generational vendettas, webs of lies, and tons of money. When read back-to-back—how I recommend it’s read—the books are an epic storytelling. I highly recommend reading this trilogy, and when you get through to the end of Convicted, come talk to me about how much you, too, have grown to love Tony and Claire.

    Blind Obsession by Ella Frank

    My Recommendation:

This book is probably unlike any you’ve ever read. Blind Obsession is haunting, yet sexy; tragic, yet lovely; mysterious, yet personal. It’s one dichotomy after another and left me so damn confused about how I was supposed to feel that by the time everything unfolded, I was relieved to make it to the end, yet disappointed to not continue. Normally, a tragic story doesn’t include hardcore sex, but in this book, it fits and makes this book a must-read for anyone who can handle having your emotions shattered.

Love Me with Lies Series by Tarryn Fisher

    My Recommendation from Thief:

At one point in this book, I actually said out loud to no one but me, my wiener dog sleeping in the corner, and my Kindle, “Fuuuuuuuuuu…” I can remember that happening only twice before, and one of those times was while reading Dirty Red, Thief’s precursor. These books kill my emotions. Tarryn Fisher has a way of creating characters that can reach into my heart, twist it like a piece of meat, make me doubt every genuine person I’ve ever met, then use my broken heart to fall in love. Without giving away any spoilers, Thief ends the Love Me With Lies trilogy with closure and heartbreak, but it’s up to you to find out whose hearts are broken in the end. The whole series is a must-read.

    Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

    My Recommendation:

I admits—Gone Girl isn’t technically a smut book. There’s no sex (I KNOW), but the crux of the story is embedded in a marriage. A MUST READ. Brilliant. Major WTFness, making twists and turns, taunting me from my bedside table to keep reading.

What are some other mind-fuck books and series do you recommend? I can always use a quality emotional blender-of-a-book.

Update: I’ve been asked why I didn’t add Tiffany Reisz’s The Original Sinners series. While they are especially dramatic and exceptionally smutty (and happen to be my favorite series of all time), they aren’t the mind-blowing, mind-fucks the books above qualify to be for me.
