Breeder by Cara Bristol

★★★★★

+ Favorite Quotes:
“She did not understand why his nearness caused her belly to clench and her sex to grow wet and throb, only knew she wanted more, that more would somehow sate the hunger.”

“I need, need, need.” The words she’d been thinking burst out. Her body hovered at the brink of discovery, yet truth skittered out of reach.

“She calmed him – when she wasn’t causing claws of lust to rake his body until he thought he’d go insane.”

Lina Says:
Breeder was one of the best anxiety causing, heart wrenching, suspenseful, sexy stories I’ve read. The plot, the characters, the villains – everything was set up so well, possibly too well, to the point where I might have developed an ulcer by the time I got to the end of the book. The foreshadowing sent my mind into a tizzy, thinking of all the things that could possibly go wrong, breaking my heart and eating through my stomach (prematurely). The story was about Dak – the Commander, the Alpha male in a male dominated society – and Omra, a…wait for it…breeder (title reference!). This was the story of forbidden love, internal battles, social unrest. It had pretty much everything. And the villains were so freaking evil! The villains gave me agita! And everything was beautifully depicted, explained, and developed to its full potential. The plot was strong. The sexy parts were very steamy and inspired feelings of warmth, love, and fulfillment. Cara Bristol seamlessly incorporated domestic discipline – spanking! – into the story as well. It fit right in with the structure of the society and had a purpose, a lesson every time it happened. And it was sexy, in a dirty, pervy kind of way. There was even some M/M sexy time, which I, personally, enjoyed.

Even though the anxiety from reading this book has left my stomach sore from the knot that would not untie itself until I got to the end, or maybe because of it, I loved this story and cannot wait to see what’s coming up next in the Breeder series. I highly recommend it.

Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey

★★★★★

+ Favorite Quotes:
“Love as thou wilt.”

“He moved like a stalking beast, shedding clothes, looming over me as I lay upon the pallet, forcing my legs over his shoulders.”

“It is my observation, though, that happiness limits the amount of suffering one is willing to inflict upon others.”

“Pain obliterates everything else. In pain, there is only the eternal present.”

“Pain redeems all. It is the awareness of life, a reminder of death.”

Lina Says:
This is probably one of the best fantasy stories I’ve ever read. Kushiel’s Dart was a beautiful and powerful story set in an alternate world. The world building was so detailed and well thought out, complete with a unique culture, religion, and rich history. There were layers upon layers of subplot, interesting characters, and court intrigue. There were no wasted details. Every word the author wrote made an impact. Like an intricate web, all the strands (words) were tied together once the big picture became clear. There were erotic and alternate sexuality elements – read that as KINKY! Oh yes! I loved that these elements were so well integrated and moved the story forward. There was adventure! A strong female lead. Heartbreak and loss, offset by true loyalty, sacrifice, and sweetened with romance. And it was deep with some very valuable insights into human nature. It had every ingredient I would want in an amazing book.

I will warn you, the first few pages drag a little because of all the backstory and world building set up. Power through it because, as soon as you get past that first intro, it will grab and hold your attention until the end.[/box_light]

A Mermaid’s Kiss by Joey W. Hill

Lina Says:
Joey W. Hill built a supernatural world, hidden from the humans, filled it with beauty and magic and then brought it to life, thrusting the reader straight into the story. That has been my experience with reading all of Joey W. Hill’s books, but especially this book, and really this whole series. Ms. Hill took some flowery clichés—virgin, mermaid, angel, good and evil—and gave them depth by building a solid plot and really strong, three-dimensional characters around them. And she achieved all of that without falling into the cheese. You know, what I mean. It wasn’t cheesy. It was thought provoking, beautiful, sexy. The connection between Jonah and Anna was enthralling. He was so dominant, so alpha. She was innocent, but not naïve. Their dynamic worked very well and I was able to really get into their romance and cheered them on. Even when Jonah was going through his broody brooding moments (yes, broody brooding, like tall, dark, and brooding, except with wings and magic). I highly recommend A Mermaid’s Kiss. I think that if you like magic, great story, and sexy alpha angel sex, then this is a great choice![/box_light]

Lina Says:
This might be a historical, but it is one of the dirtiest stories I’ve ever read. Annabel Joseph always delivers the dirty. The heroine was the very, very innocent (how innocent? so very innocent) Caitlyn, the unwanted and cloistered king’s daughter. And her hero was the Devil…well, not really the devil. He was just called the Devil because of his reputation. You can draw your own conclusions from that. So, of course, they made the perfect pair, right? Hah! Probably not at first and that was what made it so fun for me. I loved that Cait came into the union the wide-eyed virgin, while Duncan, the Devil, was the experienced one, ready to teach her, to ravish her…to open her up to the world of all those things that were forbidden. And he most certainly used her ignorance to his advantage. Taking what he wanted, telling her tales about what was “supposed” to happen between wed couples, and what was really the wife’s duty. Like I said, it was very dirty, very gritty, very raw. There was danger, too, lurking in the shadows. Mysteries, maybe even a little bit of magic. Maybe. There were moments of despair and there was definitely a glimpse of the truly ugly side of human nature. But there was also perseverance, survival, and love. I absolutely loved Cait and the Devil, and I have re-read it many times. You can safely assume that the most re-read parts of the book were strategically chosen…usually the most enjoyable and best enjoyed one-handed.[/box_light]

Angie

Hi. My name is Angie, and I’m a social-media-and-smut-book-reading addict. Hi… Angie… I’ve been working hard on the magical internet since 2006 when I retired from teaching elementary school to stay at home with my two baby girls. Now, I am a smut peddler. You can follow my nonsense on Twitter and Facebook. Simply, I’m just a girl, looking at the book world, asking it to love her.
