lipcolorLipstick can be a girl’s best accessory or her worst nightmare; it is not a one size fits all situation. There’s a lot to think about when choosing a color. If you wear a shade that clashes with your natural coloring, it may not necessarily look bad, just less harmonious with your complexion. Who wants to look washed out?! You also don’t have to fear a bold lip. Bright lipsticks can be fun, dramatic and totally sexy!

Here are some tips and tricks to find out how to pick the best lip colors for your skin tone every single time and wear it the right way:

1)  First, what’s your skin’s undertone? Are you COOL or WARM? An easy way to find out is to look at the veins on your inner wrists in natural light (go outside or stand near a window). If they appear bluish, you have cool undertones. More green? You’re warm. If it appears to be in between the two, you are considered Neutral. You want to focus on shades similar to your undertone when choosing a lipstick so knowing which one you are is very helpful.

2) The most flattering lip tones will be one or two shades darker than your natural lip color

  • Women with dark skin tone, try plums, deep wines and rich browns. Try to avoid anything with an orange hue. It makes darker skin look dull by bringing out yellow undertones.

3) If you find your lips dry or that the color you love is a bit too flaky, first apply a light layer of lip balm or moisturizer. I usually do this before my primer and foundation. You will want to let it sit on your lips for a few minutes to moisten and then blot it off with a tissue. Make sure all excess is off and to even out the texture before applying lipstick.

4) To keep lipstick from wearing off fast, fill in your lips with a lip liner. This acts as a color base, so when the lipstick wears off you still have color. Try to apply one that is the same shade as your lipstick or a nude shade.

5) Don’t match your lipstick with your clothes. It’s a pretty common mistake because it seems to be the logical thing to do. Your lipstick is supposed to compliment your skin and draw attention to your lips. It has absolutely nothing to do with your clothing choice.

Finding the right lip color should be exciting, not a boring task. You don’t have to wear the same color everyday. You can certainly find a variety of colors that will work to your advantage. And regardless of your undertone, it’s up to you to decide what looks the most flattering on yourself. If you love bright red lipstick and it makes you happy, go ahead and rock it! After all, it is all about your own personal sense of style!

Treat Yo’Self TIP OF THE WEEK

Want to matte and/or make your lipstick stay? Apply your lipstick and liner normally, and then hold a tissue over your lips while lightly dusting translucent loose face powder over the tissue. Slowly remove the tissue and you are ready to go. The powder will lightly coat your lips through the tissue, and it will set your lip color the same way it sets your makeup when you use it on your face.
